Leicester already have plan to sign attacking star who has equalled personal best this season

Ademola Lookman is likely to become a permanent Leicester City player ahead of next season, according to one transfer reporter.

Leicester City signed Ademola Lookman on loan from RB Leipzig last summer. It marked another return to English football for the London-born winger, who had spent the previous campaign on loan with Fulham.

Indeed, his time in Germany had not quite worked out since his permanent transfer from Everton to Leipzig in 2019. He failed to score in his second spell with the club, after previously getting five goals in 11 games for them on loan in the 2017-18 season.

Returning to the Premier League with Leicester City has been beneficial for him. Across all competitions so far, he has managed to contribute seven goals and five assists from 33 appearances.

He has therefore matched his most prolific season in professional football. Previously, he scored seven goals in his second season with Charlton Athletic, between League One and the FA Cup. He also hit the same tally in 2017-18, between Everton and Leipzig.

Lookman has also made an international breakthrough this season. After previously representing England at under-19, under-20 and under-21 level, a switch of allegiance to Nigeria has allowed him to earn his first two senior caps for a country.

His international future is now clear for the rest of his career. However, he can change the club he represents. And it seems his plans are to remain with Leicester, rather than return to Leipzig.

According to transfer journalist Ekrem Konur, Leicester are planning to sign Lookman on a permanent basis.

There was no mention of an option to buy when the initial loan deal was announced. However, with Lookman having settled at the King Power Stadium, it makes sense for them to return to the negotiating table with Leipzig.

His contract with his parent club has another two years left to run on it. But it is probably in their best interests to let him go ahead of schedule – especially while there is an interested party waiting to pay in the shape of Leicester.

Rodgers pleased with Ademola Lookman

Foxes manager Brendan Rodgers was praiseworthy of Lookman after he scored the opener in their 2-1 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday.

He said: “I thought he was excellent. I think that with Ade, he’s been unfortunate, because [Harvey] Barnesy’s played on the left side, so I’ve had to play him on the right. But it’s pretty clear the level he gets to on the left side is higher than the right.

“I was more pleased with his aggression. He’s a talent, but what he was today was competitive, and that’s what you need to be at the highest level.

“I thought overall his football quality was very good. He makes a great movement and scores a great goal. But for me, he was aggressive, he was pressing, he was counter-pressing, and then he showed those moments of quality. So I thought he was excellent.”
