Leicester at front of the queue for Brazilian winger once valued at €70m

Leicester City are the most serious candidate to sign Brazilian winger David Neres but have not yet made a bid, a report has claimed.

The Foxes have invested into their squad this summer as they look to go one step further than the last two seasons. In both they have narrowly missed out on a Champions League spot. So approximately £60m has been splashed thus far, with very little money coming in from departures.

Centre-back Jannik Vestergaard, defensive midfielder Boubakary Soumare and forward Patson Daka have been recruited.

If they want to increase their chances of a top four finish even more, the chance is there for them to take.

That’s according to Ajax Showtime. They say Leicester are in pole position for their club’s forward, Neres.

The 24-year-old has two years left on his contract he signed with the Dutch club in 2019. Since then, he has seen his stock drop slightly.

At that time, he was valued at €70m and linked with Manchester United. Reports claimed they offered €50m, which was rejected.

Ajax made him their highest paid player in a move that hasn’t really worked out.

In the two seasons prior to the new deal he’d registered 22 goals and 24 assists in the Eredivisie.

In comparison, his numbers for the past couple of league campaigns read nine goals and six assists. Nevertheless, he remains an exciting young prospect.

Leicester are joined in the mix by French side Lyon. They are managed by former Ajax boss Peter Bosz.

He supposedly wants a reunion with his old player. But the report states Leicester see Neres as a ‘desired reinforcement’ and as such are the most ‘concrete’ of the potential suitors.

Plans afoot for big Leicester contract

Meanwhile, Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers says talks are planned aimed at getting Youri Tielemans to sign a new contract with the club.

The 24-year-old Belgium midfielder, the Foxes’ player of the season and scorer of the winning goal in their FA Cup final success at Wembley, has been the subject of transfer speculation this summer with Liverpool reported to be among his admirers.

Tielemans has two years remaining on his existing deal and Rodgers said: “I hope we can have him for longer. Jon (Rudkin, director of football) is meeting with his representatives.

“He is a top-class professional, a great guy and someone I love working with. As I have said before, I will give him everything to help him continuously improve and he will continue to give us everything too.”
