Levy makes ‘firm approach’ for colourful, but controversial manager to fill Tottenham vacancy

Daniel Levy is ready to get creative in his search for a new Tottenham manager after reportedly targeting a move for one of the game’s more controversial characters.

Gennaro Gattuso earned a fearsome reputation as a player with Glasgow Rangers and AC Milan. And he has carried that no-nonsense approach into his managerial career; first with his beloved Milan and mor recently with Napoli. However, speculation has suggested his time at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium could be coming to an end after just 18 months.

But that does not mean that Gattuso will be out of work for long. Indeed, respected Italian journalist Ciro Venerato, of Rai Sport, claims he has already been the subject of an approach from Levy as he looks to fill their managerial vacancy.

“Gattuso will not be the Napoli coach from Monday, the Napoli players have known for months that Rino will no longer be the Napoli coach. Lazio and Juventus are on Gattuso, but the news of the day is that Tottenham have put Gattuso on the list of candidates for the next coach,” Venerato said (via CalcioNapoli24 and Sport Witness).

Gattuso isn’t the first Italian manager Tottenham have been linked with since Jose Mourinho departed last month.

Indeed, they have also made checks on Inter coach Antonio Conte, though that would seem highly ambitious after his recent Serie A success.

Venetato claims their interest in Conte is genuine. However, their path to Gattuso appears a lot smoother.

“The English club have been dealing with Conte for a month, but now also like Gattuso. Tottenham president Daniel Levy has seen many Napoli matches and has watched Gattuso closely.

“He was impressed by the quality of the game and the quality of the ideas. He took in the matches against Milan and Roma.”

The appointment of Gattuso would certainly be an eye-catching one from a Tottenham perspective. Their fans will remember clearly his run-in with former Spurs coach Joe Jordan during the Champions League match in back in 2011.

Edin Terzic also linked with Tottenham

Tottenham, meanwhile, are said to be ‘intensively considering’ departing Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzic as their next manager.

According to BILD, they could be ready to move for Terzic, who is also wanted by Crystal Palace and Newcastle.

Terzic, 38, was appointed Dortmund boss until the end of the season after Lucien Favre was sacked back in December.

However, BILD (via Sport Witness) states that Terzic will leave the Bundesliga giants this summer. To that end, several clubs are already showing an interest in his services, including the trio from England.

The report adds that Terzic could be an ideal replacement for Mourinho. He’s described as ‘young, eloquent, emotional, speaks fluent English and knows the Premier League’. He enjoyed a spell as a coach at West Ham earlier in his career.
