Liverpool gaze turns to Leicester sensation – but twin obstacles remain

Reports in the Italian media claim both Liverpool and Barcelona are monitoring Leicester City star Youri Tielemans as they plot their summer recruitment drive.

Tielemans, 24, has been sensational for the Foxes ever since arriving from Monaco in January 2019. His first six months at the King Power Stadium were on loan before permanent terms were signed in July 2019. And the Belgium international has become a vital fixture in the side.

He has started 36 of 37 Premier League appearances this season, scoring six goals. And he has already enjoyed 107 outings in all competitions, finding the net on 17 occasions.

But there is much more to his game than just goals, with the former Anderlecht star registering four assists this term. Tielemans was already highly rated at the club and throughout European football.

But his stunning Wembley strike in the FA Cup final against Chelsea seems to have ramped up interest even further. His goal saw the East Midlanders lift the famous trophy for the first time in their history.

And it is obvious just how important he is to Brendan Rodgers’ side. The Belgian has repeatedly expressed that he is happy at the club and there has been no mention of a summer exit.

But Calciomercato claim the two European heavyweights are interested in signing him. Liverpool look set to lose Gini Wijnaldum on a free transfer, with the Dutchman expected to join Barca.

And Reds chief Jurgen Klopp is already looking at options to fill the void. Tielemans would appear to fit the bill but he will not come cheap.

New Tielemans deal in offing

The talented midfielder is currently under contract until the summer of 2023. But it was reported back in April that the Leicester money men were keen to extend his deal.

They want to tie him down until 2025 and raise his release clause to £80m to protect their prized asset. With finances tight in the football world, that figure might just do the trick.

Manchester United have also been mentioned in connection with the player. But it seems as though he is happy to stay and fight for silverware with the Foxes.

Last month he said: “It’s brilliant to be here. I really like it here. We’ll see what’s coming in the future.

“But I think the environment is just perfect to win trophies here. You can’t predict the future but I think everything around the club and inside the club is made for it.”

One negative for Tielemans is the fact Leicester may miss out on the Champions League once again. They are currently fifth in the table and need results to go their way to nudge back into the top four on Sunday.
