Wolves have tested the water with an opening bid for forgotten Liverpool forward Divock Origi but will need to increase their offer, according to a report.
The 26-year-old arrived at Anfield to much fanfare back in July 2015 but has never matched his billing. Thought to be the next superstar, he was handed just five Premier League starts during his first campaign at Anfield. The Belgium international managed five goals and the following season looked to be his breakout year.
The Ostend-born ace bagged seven goals for 34 top-flight outings, 14 of which were starts. However, with prospects of game time dwindling due to the Reds’ attacking ranks, he was loaned to Wolfsburg the follow season.
And it has been a case of one step forward and two back since then, with most appearances coming from the bench. But the former Lille attacker will always have the memory of his 2019 Champions League exploits.
He scored twice as Jurgen Klopp’s side came back from a three-goal deficit to defeat Barcelona in the semi-finals. And then he notched again as the Merseysiders beat Tottenham 2-0 in the final.
They are memories that will last a lifetime but the present could well be away from the north west. There have been strong rumours that Origi’s time at the club is coming to an end.
He has been linked with both Leeds and West Ham United but now Bruno Lage is thought to be keen. Journalist Ekrem Konur has taken to Twitter to confirm that they have firmed up their interest.
He tweeted: “Wolverhampton have made a £10m bid for Divock Origi to Liverpool. Liverpool are demanding £20m.”
Origi could be Wolves wildcard
There is no question that Nuno Espirito Santo’s side struggled without the crocked Raul Jimenez last term. His head injury was both sickening and determinantal to the West Midlander’s hopes of matching their previous success.
Goals were hard to come by but the Mexican is now back in the ranks after his protracted recovery. However, it is still unclear how much game time he will see, especially early in the campaign.
Origi would be an alternative and someone who could come off the bench to rest the star striker later in games. Fabio Silva got through plenty of work in 2020-2021 but found the net just four times in the top flight.
He is likely to improve as his career develops but Lage needs a goalscorer right now. If he arrives, Wolves fans will be holding their breath that Origi can finally deliver on a consistent basis.
