Liverpool threatened as Prem rival makes convincing plan to tempt striker

Patson Daka is high on Leicester City’s shortlist to succeed Jamie Vardy as they prepare to compete with the likes of Liverpool for his signature, according to a report.

Daka is one of the most in demand forwards across Europe. He has effectively succeeded Erling Haaland at RB Salzburg and is scoring at a similar rate to what the Norwegian did. Last season, Daka scored 27 goals from 28 games in the Austrian Bundesliga.

Those exploits have put him on the radar of a number of top European clubs. A move to the Premier League could be in store for the Zambia international.

Liverpool and West Ham are among those to have been linked, while claims of a move to Chelsea have been played down.

It is Liverpool who may have the edge due to their established relationship with the Red Bull group. They have agreed to sign Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig and have previously taken the likes of Takumi Minamino and Naby Keita from the group of clubs.

But according to the Daily Mirror, Leicester are now emerging as strong contenders for Daka’s signature.

The Foxes are looking to a future without Jamie Vardy, who is under contract until 2023. By then, he will be 36 years old, so they need a long-term successor.

Kelechi Iheanacho has been making his case when Vardy has been unavailable over the past few months. But they are expected to make a signing to provide further competition and Daka is one of their preferred candidates.

It is claimed that Daka might cost just £17m, which seems a bargain given his recent form.

Leicester are keen to take advantage and hope to offer the 22-year-old a quicker route to first team Premier League football than Liverpool or Chelsea could.

Leipzig defender dreaming of Liverpool

At the other end of the pitch, there is another man who could trade a Red Bull club for Liverpool – although it would likely have to wait.

Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol has opened up on his desire to follow in Konate’s footsteps in the future.

He told 24sata (as cited by This Is Anfield) this week, when asked where he would want to play: “In Liverpool. From a young age, I watched Liverpool games with my dad and I grew up with only them.

“When I took football more seriously, I started following them, and I definitely want the Premier League and Liverpool.”

Gvardiol could feature for Croatia in their Euro 2020 opener against England on Sunday.
