Liverpool to bid for Tottenham defensive target Klopp has signed before

Liverpool are considering making a bid for Matthias Ginter to increase their defensive depth, according to a report.

Injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip this season have shown why Liverpool need more options in defence. They have had to rely on players out of position as well as academy graduates. Nat Phillips has stepped up in particular recently. But a new signing may still arrive.

Liverpool are not expected to turn Ozan Kabak’s loan move from Schalke into a permanent one. As such, they will be thinking about targeting another defender in the summer.

It has been thought that Ibrahima Konate will be that player. There have been plenty of rumours about the RB Leipzig centre-back moving to Merseyside.

But there are doubts about how much his release clause is actually worth. If it is too high for Liverpool, they may have to consider cheaper alternatives.

One option, according to Todofichajes, would be Ginter. The German international will be out of contract with Borussia Monchengladbach in 2022. If they can’t get him to renew soon, they will sell him this summer.

That could present an opportunity for Jurgen Klopp, who signed Ginter for Borussia Dortmund in 2014. They only worked together for one season but could have the chance to reunite.

It is claimed that Liverpool have already been in contact with Gladbach. Ginter is ready to make the leap to a top club and Anfield could be the perfect destination.

The 27-year-old was recently linked with a different Premier League club, Tottenham. Bild claimed there would be a €35m asking price in place and that Spurs had already come forward.

The north London outfit are looking to strengthen defensively, upgrading on their current options. Many of their defenders have been linked with exits, so they could need replacements.

Liverpool were mentioned as rivals for his signature then, though, and it seems those links are increasing.

Liverpool linked with Leicester star

It will be an important summer for Liverpool as they look to get back among the Premier League’s elite.

A top-four finish is in their hands now but they will want to aim higher next season – especially after the way they stormed to the 2019-20 title.

As such, they will be looking to reinforce their squad. Defence is not the only area they need to improve.

For example, they need to find more depth in attack – especially if they lose Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane. But perhaps the most important piece of business will be in midfield.

Georginio Wijnaldum is out of contract at the end of June and there has been little progress over a renewal. Paris Saint-Germain are the latest side to show an interest. He remains an important cog for Klopp, though, so they will have to replace him if he leaves.

To do so, they have recently been linked with someone who has been impressing with Leicester recently.
