Liverpool urged to sign exciting Belgian they may pay ‘over the odds’ for

Liverpool have been told that Youri Tielemans would be an ideal fit for their midfield if they are prepared to spend big on the Leicester City midfielder.

After Georginio Wijnaldum left as a free agent to join Paris Saint-Germain, there are two voids for Liverpool to fill. On one front, they need to replace the leadership he provided as one of their four core leaders. But more importantly, they need to find a solution to fill his boots in midfield.

Jurgen Klopp has spoken emotionally about the departing Dutchman and seems to regard him irreplaceable. Indeed, with Thiago Alcantara getting back into form and Curtis Jones maturing all the time, he might not need to sign another midfielder.

But that continues to be a solution mooted in the media, with a number of players linked in that position.

The top target appeared to be Florian Neuhaus from Borussia Monchengladbach, until the German indicated he could stay put. Therefore, Liverpool will have to weigh up other options.

For example, Leicester star Tielemans has been one suggestion after playing a key role for his current club. He was a major coup for the Foxes when arriving from Monaco and has helped them consolidate in the European places.

Given that there was interest from bigger clubs before he joined Leicester, that has not faded. Manchester United and Liverpool have repeatedly been linked, prompting Leicester to consider giving him a contract extension. His current deal runs until 2023 but they could insert a huge release clause by extending it.

In the meantime, Liverpool have been encouraged to make a move for Tielemans by someone who played for both them and Leicester.

Emile Heskey told Goal: “Tielemans is a fantastic player. Tielemans is the kind of player that would suit any midfield and any team.

“He excites you because he does the simple things very, very well – the simple passes from here to there and you look at them and think, ‘that was crisp, that was nice’.

“That slide pass that sometimes gets cut out doesn’t with Tielemans because he is so crisp with his passing. He would fit into any team.

“The good thing for Leicester is, they don’t need to sell. You have got to pay, and you might have to pay over the odds. Leicester don’t need to sell, the player is happy.

“Winning the FA Cup helped; it would have helped even more if they had got into the Champions League but being in the Europa League is still good.

“I think he would suit the way that Liverpool play, but you would have to prise him from Leicester.”

Tielemans staying quiet over rumours

Currently on duty with Belgium at Euro 2020, Tielemans recently brushed off the speculation.

He said: “I don’t think about it, I am focusing on the Euros.

“I don’t listen to transfer rumours. No matter how much I am valued, it doesn’t change anything for me. I just want to make the best Euros I can.”

Probed specifically about replacing Wijnaldum, he added: “That’s really none of my business right now.

“Let the journalists speak. They undoubtedly have a lot to do with that.

“But I don’t care about that. All I can do is make sure that I am as good as possible on the pitch.”
