Luis Suarez warned off ‘easy’ transfer path with Aston Villa decision looming
Free agent-to-be Luis Suarez has been warned one potential next move will be more difficult than he might think amid continued speculation linking him to Aston Villa.
The Uruguayan legend, 35, looks on course to leave Atletico Madrid this summer. Suarez’s contract at the Wanda Metropolitano expires on June 30. If his gametime this season is anything to go by, an exit is the likeliest scenario.
Indeed, Suarez has been made to take a backseat this season despite firing Atletico to LaLiga glory last year.
The ex-Liverpool favourite has accrued 1,641 minutes of league action. However, that equates to just 54.7 minutes per match when spread out across his 30 appearances.
Regardless, he still has 11 league goals to his name this term and would represent an intriguing prospect for any suitor willing to chance their arm.
Following the successful January signing of Philippe Coutinho, Aston Villa have predictably drawn links with Suarez.
Steven Gerrard’s Liverpool connections were believed to have played a major part in bringing Coutinho to Villa Park. Those connections could seemingly do the same for Suarez.
The Birmingham Mail acknowledge the continued links between Villa and Suarez. However, they also note the striker has previously admitted he would like to play in America.
Suarez warned against ‘easy’ MLS narrative
David Beckham’s Inter Miami are deemed the likeliest club to offer him that opportunity.
Great players moving to MLS in the latter stages of their careers is not a new concept. The way of life and comparatively lower standard of football has its appeal for major stars on the decline.
However, when speaking to Christian Vieri’s Twitch channel, fellow striker Gonzalo Higuain warned that MLS is no longer a walk in the park.
Higuain currently plays for Inter Miami after moving to Florida in 2020. His goals ratio since joining stands at roughly one in three – far lower than over the course of his career in Europe.
“I thought I would come here and play with a cigarette in my mouth and, instead, it is difficult,” said the Argentine. “It is a tough league.
“I learned that it is similar to Italian football. In Spain and England it is easier to do well. While in Italy, if you do not know the league, you suffer.”
Whether Suarez’s future lays back in England, South America, or the USA, only time will tell.
However, the Daily Mail reported in March that Suarez may be open to one more move within Europe before then moving to America. They also claimed Steven Gerrard has phoned his former teammate to register Villa’s interest.
