Man City in lead for Haaland after submitting best offer, but overlooked factor becomes deterrent
Manchester City have made the best offer for Erling Haaland so far, reporters claim – but there is an overlooked factor that could scupper his hopes of a summer move.
Haaland is one of the most in-demand players in world football due to the existence of an inviting release clause in his Borussia Dortmund contract. His goalscoring form for them has been prolific.
He could be exactly the type of player Manchester City need to become even more dominant. They have often played without a number nine this season, but still have a chance of winning three trophies.
Adding one of Europe’s most lethal finishers to the mix would only make them more dangerous. Therefore, they are leading the race to sign Haaland in the summer.
According to Sport1, they have made an offer of €75m (around £62.5m) to Borussia Dortmund to match his exit clause. Furthermore, they will give €30m (just under £25m) in commission to agent Mino Raiola and his father, their former player Alf-Inge Haaland.
The Norway international would then be in line to receive a contract worth €30m per season (around £480,000 per week) over five years.
Due to their ability to meet these high demands, Manchester City are said to be the favourites to take Haaland at present.
Yet, a transfer is still in doubt – for any suitor – due to concerns about the 21-year-old’s injury record. Haaland has missed 17 games through injury this season.
Journalist Patrick Berger revealed: “The offers are actually not flying in as much as one would have expected a year ago.
“The problem is the susceptibility to injury. Haaland only played 40% of the games and is currently complaining of foot pain again.”
Haaland suitors ‘taking a certain risk’
Another reporter, Oliver Muller, added: “The fact that Haaland is injured in the phase in which a decision should actually be made undoubtedly plays a psychological role.
“This makes some people aware that you are taking a certain risk with such a mega deal.”
Despite the risks, Man City remain in pole position to take the former RB Salzburg striker in the summer. That said, it is not a given he will be on the move.
Current employers Dortmund would like an indication of his plans soon so they can firm up their own ahead of next season.
