Man Utd given hefty task as Murtough flops with first bid for ‘priority’ transfer target

Manchester United have had an opening transfer bid for Atletico Madrid full-back Kieran Trippier rejected, according to a report.

Recently-appointed football director John Murtough reportedly began work on summer deals the day after United’s Europa League final defeat in Gdansk. While winger Jadon Sancho has resurfaced a the top target, right-back Trippier has also re-emerged on their radar.

The Red Devils looked into his transfer in January, but pulled the plug due to his off-field suspension.

However, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly has concerns about Aaron Wan-Bissaka. As such, he wants to bring in Trippier to act as solid competition.

According to Football Insider, United have now submitted an opening bid worth around £10million. However, they have faced rejection from the La Liga champions.

Indeed, Atletico have told United chiefs to increase the offer if they are to prise the England international away.

Trippier is currently with the England squad preparing for Sunday’s Euro 2020 opener against Croatia.

Although, he has reportedly told his international colleagues that he wants to move to Old Trafford.

What’s more, Football Insider adds that the former Tottenham man is keen to return to England after two years in Madrid.

Trippier left Tottenham in the summer of 2019 and has two years left on his contract in Spain.

In any case, the 30-year-old is supposedly a ‘priority’ target and so United could come back in with a better bid.

As for Wan-Bissaka, Solskjaer wants to try his current right-back in a more central role in pre-season this summer. That could be on the right of a three-man defence, or as a centre-back in a back four.

West Ham eye Lingard transfer

Meanwhile, West Ham will step up their pursuit of Jesse Lingard in the coming weeks, a report claims.

The Man Utd midfielder got his career back on track with a sensational loan spell at West Ham last season.

A role at Euro 2020 would have postponed a decision over his future, but he has not been included and so has more free time – which the Hammers plan to use to try to land his permanent signing.
