Man Utd have belief about manipulating transfer race, as striker enquiry sent

Manchester United have put Southampton striker Danny Ings on their transfer radar and have a belief about a deal going ahead, a report claims.

The Englishman has enjoyed a fantastic resurgence since moving to the south coast in 2018. After an initial loan spell from Liverpool, he netted 22 Premier League goals last term, almost clinching the Golden Boot. As a result, he got himself back in the England team earlier this season.

While he has dropped off this season due to injury and his side’s poor form, though, reports claim that he could be in demand again this summer.

Manchester City have supposedly shown interest, with derby rivals United also linked.

The Telegraph has now resurfaced those links, claiming that the Red Devils have made enquiries over his availability.

Ings’ situation is amplified by the fact that he will have only one year left on his contract at the end of the season.

Indeed, the newspaper says that United are aware that a formal bid could spark a bidding war and, crucially, put pressure on the Saints to sell.

The south coast club would not want to lose a player of the 28-year-old’s quality on a free transfer next season.

However, they have so far failed to reach an agreement in extension talks with the player and his representatives.

As well as because of injury and a bout of coronavirus, Ings’ drop in form coincides with Southampton’s downturn in recent months. He has scored 12 goals and set up four others in the Premier League this term.

Ings, Kane have transfer possibilities

United bolstered their striker ranks earlier this month by tying Edinson Cavani to a new one-year deal. However, the 34-year-old’s time at the top level looks limited.

As such, the Red Devils are looking for a long-term addition, with Ings at the peak of his career.

Harry Kane is also approaching his peak at 27 and has reportedly told Tottenham that he wants to leave in the summer and stay in the Premier League.

But his contract only runs out in 2024, so Spurs are in a much stronger financial position than Southampton over their star man.

As a result, the fees for the players would likely differ by a big margin if they both moved on.
