Man Utd reach loan decision over star signing, but major obstacle remains

Manchester United and Alaves have all-but agreed to extend Facundo Pellistri’s loan deal until the end of next season, a report claims.

United made headlines last October by signing the young Uruguayan from his native country. Uncertainty initially emerged over whether whether he would go straight into the team, as fellow teenage signing Amad Diallo has done. However, after playing with the Under-23s, Pellistri moved to Spain on loan.

The 19-year-old has had a bit-part role in proceedings in La Liga, featuring in 10 of 13 games since he joined.

In fact, he has only amassed 455 minutes of action, playing only one 90-minute stint.

As a result, Calciomercato reports that the Red Devils want him to continue his development in Spain next season.

Alaves chiefs have agreed to the loan’s extension, but they must secure their top-flight status first.

The Spanish club sit 15th in the table, four points above the relegation zone with two games remaining.

However, 18th-placed Valladolid have a game in hand. Furthermore, Alaves’ tough end to the campaign sees them face Granada and Sevilla.

Therefore, they have a battle on their hands to retain their place in the division, given that they have only won once in their past four games.

Should Alaves face relegation, Calciomercato adds that Pellistri will return to England to ‘evaluate his options’.

Nevertheless, the forward had considerable interest from around Europe in January before he moved to Alaves.

As such, United will likely not be short of suitors if they have to find the player a different club.

Cavani opens up on exit speculation

Meanwhile, a United player whose future is no longer uncertain is Pellistri’s fellow Uruguayan, Edinson Cavani.

The 34-year-old signed a one-year extension to his Old Trafford stay earlier this week.

But the deal came after considerable concerns that he could walk away from United to seek another new challenge.
