Man Utd return on for Jesse Lingard as new twist scuppers prime suitors
Jesse Lingard may not get to sign for West Ham on a permanent basis due to his wage demands, according to a report.
Lingard joined the Hammers on loan from Manchester United in the January transfer window. He had been frozen out at Old Trafford but has found a new lease of life at the London Stadium. So far, he has scored nine goals and provided three assists in a claret and blue shirt.
His renewed form has led to much speculation about his future. Only one year will remain on his contract with Man Utd by the time he returns, so they face a tough decision on him.
If they decide to cash in, then West Ham would seemingly be one of the main suitors. Such a move may also appeal to Lingard, given how he has settled in there.
But those plans may have been put in tatters due to the financial aspects of the deal. According to the Daily Mail, Lingard wants a four-year contract worth at least £100,000 per week. West Ham simply cannot afford that.
The Hammers have had to put contract talks with most of their players – and manager David Moyes – on hold. They have lost money amid the absence of fans from stadia and are now trying to plan for the future.
Qualifying for Europe, which they have a chance of, could help their financial situation. But it still may not be enough to afford Lingard.
Therefore, the midfielder could return to Man Utd in the summer and see out the last year of his contract. He may have struggled for action under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer previously, but may get a second chance.
Even if there isn’t a place for him in Solskjaer’s plans, he still might end up staying in Manchester. That’s because a number of his other suitors are in a similar financial situation to West Ham.
Therefore, United could be the only club who can afford him – even if it is unclear how much they would use him.

West Ham changing transfer plans
The financial situation at the London Stadium has also changed their plans for another of their main targets.
Tammy Abraham had been lined up as an option to become their new striker after getting frustrated at Chelsea. But David Moyes previously admitted that they wouldn’t be able to meet the £40m asking price.
However, that hasn’t ruled them out of the running entirely, as they have come up with another plan to get their man.
