Man Utd still hot on long-term target, though failed signing must move first

Manchester United could still yet make an approach for a target they’ve admired all summer long, but it depends on a previous failed signing moving on, it has been claimed.

Man Utd fans were given an almighty lift when news emerged of a deal being reached to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford. The club wasted little time transforming their interest into tangible actions on a whirlwind Friday afternoon. However, a move could still be on the cards for another player that has been on their wish-list all summer long.

Kieran Trippier has been heavily linked with the Red Devils in the past couple of months. But they’ve made very little progress.

Atletico Madrid have insisted any club will have to pay Trippier’s release clause. This would be a considerable fee for a 30-year-old, which is clearly not ideal.

There could be a development, though. Firstly, United are currently in talks with Borussia Dortmund over Diogo Dalot.

The latest on this front is that United have knocked back a loan offer with an option to buy. They want something more concrete from the German side. Indeed, trusted source Fabrizio Romano claimed Man Utd ‘will only consider permanent deals or loans with obligations to buy’.

According to Sky Sports, if this comes they are likely to make one last attempt for Trippier.

In the second report regarding this story, AS have revealed Atletico themselves are looking at a new right-back target.

They like Lille defender Mehmet Zeki Celik. The 24-year-old has reportedly drawn their attention with his attacking intent and his potential to improve.

Diego Simone has remained insistent that Trippier is part of his plans. But if they do get Celik through the door, United maybe able to probe the Spanish side once more.

A serious offer could finally get a deal over the line. There are a lot of dominos that need to fall first before that can even be considered, though.

Man Utd in Cavani conundrum

Meanwhile, Edinson Cavani and Manchester United may come to blows. Uruguay have indicated that the veteran striker will play in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Earlier this week, the Premier League confirmed that clubs had ‘reluctantly but unanimously’ decided not to release players for international matches which will be played in red-list countries.

That is due to continuing concerns over the Covid 19 pandemic. But shortly after the announcement on Tuesday, Cavani appeared to be puzzled by the decision.

The 34-year-old posted a picture of the statement along with several question marks on his Instagram page.
