Man Utd ‘wowed’ and ready to perform transfer U-turn to land England man

Manchester United are ‘seriously impressed’ and ready to launch a firm approach to sign Ben White this summer, according to one observer.

White has underlined his incredible ability by claiming a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the European Championships. Despite only making his senior debut last week, he impressed on his first full start. Now the Brighton star – also named his club’s Player of the Year – comes into England’s 26-man squad. That’s at the expense of the unlucky Liverpool man Trent Alexander-Arnold.

A number of top clubs have been watching White for some time. He caught the eye during his year on loan at Leeds and has gone from strength to strength.

According to reports, Manchester United lead that chase, as do Arsenal and Liverpool, who have also kept a watching brief.

There is also interest from further afield too, with Borussia Dortmund said to be keen. Jose Mourinho’s Roma and Mauricio Pochettino’s PSG are also reportedly keeping tabs on the player too.

Signing a new centre-half is one of United’s main objectives this summer. The likes of Jules Kounde, Pau Torres and Raphael Varane – all established names – have been tipped as targets.

However, Kevin Campbell reckons United will abandon their plans to sign any of those established players in favour of White.

Speaking to Football Insider, the former Arsenal star claims United would relish adding White’s talent to their defence.

“Look, he’s a ball playing centre-half who did really well at Leeds and who has shown he is more than capable of playing in the Premier League at Brighton will be of interest to Manchester United,” he said.

“His stock has risen a lot in the last two years. Now that he is in the England squad clubs like Man Utd will be thinking, ‘Wow. He can play at that level now.’

“He would only be a major asset to a club like Manchester United. You can see it happening.

“He is an international now who could be part of the rotation at United. I am sure United would like to have a player like him in their squad because he is also very versatile. He is a good player who is only going to get better.”

Brighton set White price

It all promises to be an interesting summer for the former Leeds United loanee. And while Brighton are in no mood to sell, it’s reported they have named their price for the player were any of his suitors come calling.

As per the Daily Mail, Brighton are ‘looking to fend off interest in White by placing a £50m fee on his head’.

And while the report claims Brighton are keen to keep White next season, realistically they know they could face a tough task.

It is understood ‘an offer of £50million could be too good for Brighton to turn down’. That’s despite White having three years to run on his contract.

Brighton chief executive Paul Barber recently admitted that the Seagulls would have to consider selling some of their best players if the “right offer” came along.

He said: “We know some of our best players aren’t going to be with us for ever and, if the right offer comes along and they want to leave, then they can go.”
