Manchester United hold serious reservations over €30m deal for brilliant teenager

Manchester United are worried that Eduardo Camavinga would prefer a move to Spain rather than the Premier League as they tentatively pursue the French wonderkid.

United have been mentioned as suitors for the 18-year-old, as well as Chelsea, but Real Madrid have been heavily linked with the attacking talent.

Camavinga is expected to quit Rennes this summer, given that he has just a year remaining on his contract in France. The Ligue 1 outfit are looking to cash in on the Frenchman, rather than potentially lose him on a free transfer in 2022 – with a bargain fee of €30million being mooted.

PSG are also in the hunt for the talented youngster, but The Telegraph report that United officials are concerned that Camavinga would prefer a move to Spain.

As per the report, United “have registered their interest” in Camavinga. They have also “asked to be kept fully abreast of any developments involving the player”.

But United’s director of football John Murtough has serious reservations about Camavinga’s desire to come to England.

United are also prioritising other positions with a move for a centre-back thought to be at the forefront of Murtough’s thinking.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is concerned that if either Harry Maguire or Victor Lindelof get injured, their back-up options are all injury prone.

Eric Bailly, Axel Tuanzebe and Phil Jones have all faced long spells on the sidelines in recent seasons.

The Telegraph report United do want to do a deal for Raphael Varane. However, after being left scarred by recent approaches for Varane’s old Real team-mate Sergio Ramos, they are proceeding with caution.

Meanwhile, if Camavinga’s preference is to join either Barcelona or Real Madrid, even then a deal is far from straight forward. Both Spanish giants are struggling financially due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

And the duo’s moneymen may be willing to spend upwards of €30m on a player who will be available for free in 12 months. It would not be a surprise to see the pair wait and try and land the youngster on a pre-contract agreement in January.

Solskjaer meanwhile, has welcomed some new, but familiar faces to pre-season training.

Pre-season plans

“Well, pre-season is always a fresh start, a new start with new opportunities to look forward to the season,” Solskjaer told the club’s website.

“Some of the players have just started their holiday so we know it’s a depleted squad but it gives the young kids a taste of what it is like to have a proper pre-season with top professionals like Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata in the first team, Lee Grant, Tom Heaton is back.

“They’ve done it so many times. Mason, Aaron, Axel are first-team players who will bring these boys along and it’s a good opportunity for them.”

“We’ve got six weeks together before the league starts and a couple of training camps here in the UK. It’s the most sensible thing, we felt, being in and round here.

“You don’t get the, how do you say, aggravation of are we green, red or amber? It’s just the way the world works at the moment.

“The young kids will definitely be part of the Derby game and then we’ve got another couple of games coming up and they can be part of it. Gradually, more and more players from the Euros will join in.

“They’ll get a taste of some football. Then roundabouts early August, some will go on loan. We’ve already lined up a few and some of them are still in discussions between us and the players about where is the best place to go.”
