Mason Mount hails ‘special occasion’ and makes huge Chelsea boast

Mason Mount was lost for words after Chelsea beat Manchester City to win the Champions League and feels his side are ‘the best in the world’.

The Blues claimed Europe’s elite club competition for the second time with a 1-0 triumph over City in Porto. The west Londoners deserved to lift the trophy after outplaying Pep Guardiola’s side. The Spaniard’s team selection and tactics will come under scrutiny on a night that not much went right for the Citizens.

Kai Havertz scored the all-important goal on 42 minutes after a defence-spitting pass from Mount. And the England international was ecstatic after the final whistle, admitting that he was in dreamland.

“I can’t put it into words. It’s impossible. I just mentioned then that I’ve played in two finals for Chelsea and we lost them both,” he told BT Sport. “The way that hurt… It’s all I’ve dreamt winning a trophy with Chelsea. To go all the way in the Champions League.  We played some tough teams. We are in a final and we won it.”

And the 22-year-old feels that, after what they have achieved, the Stamford Bridge outfit are currently peerless.

“It’s such a special occasion,” he added. “At this moment in time, we’re the best team in the world. You can’t take that away from us.”

City were not at their best and lost the influential Kevin De Bruyne to injury midway through the second half. But Mount still felt they were a formidable foe to overcome.

“What a team Man City are. You have seen what they did in the Premier League,” he went on to say. “It was such a tough game. We got a goal and defended the whole game. We left everything on the line and we won.”

Chelsea and Mount have bragging rights for Euros

The match in Portugal brought down the curtain on domestic matters this term. Thoughts will now turn to the delayed European Championship.

Mount is likely to be there and he confessed that it may be a bit frosty at the start.

“To be at this moment now going into the Euros,” he continued. “Some of the boys from City will be meeting up with us and I know that will be hard.

“I spoke to them, they deserved to be here. It’s tough for them but hopefully next season we’ll be pushing for the Premier League as well.”
