Mason reveals top man and ‘most pleasing’ aspect of Tottenham triumph
Interim boss Ryan Mason praised Tottenham’s willingness to keep going in their victory over Wolves and felt Dele Alli was the best player on the pitch.
Spurs ran out worthy 2-0 winners at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to maintain their slim top-four hopes. Harry Kane scored the opener and also hit the post before Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg wrapped things up after the break. In truth, the hosts could have scored many more and Wolves had Conor Coady to thank for keeping the score down.
The centre-back pulled off two goal line clearances and was a rock at the back for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side. But he could not prevent Spurs taking all three points and Mason was understandably delighted with the result.
“Excellent, we created lots of chances and the scoreline was probably a bit flattering to them,” he told BBC Sport. “There were big moments, their keeper made a couple of good saves, we hit the post three times and dominated the game in the second half, so really pleased.”
The 29-year-old replaced the sacked Jose Mourinho in the north London hotseat. He has tried to put his stamp on the team.
Only time will tell where they end up but the former midfielder could see positive signs throughout the match.
“It takes time to change things but the players are willing and want to learn and get better,” he added. “Even at 2-0 we were still pressing and creating chances and that was the most pleasing thing. I’m sure some of the forwards will be disappointed they didn’t get more goals.”
Mason questions Coady accolade
Coady was handed the man of the match award for his display in a losing effort. But there were plenty of Spurs players who could have been given the nod.
Alli seemed in the wilderness under Mourinho but is now back in favour. And, according to Mason, the England man was peerless on Sunday afternoon.
“Dele was my man of the match,” he continued. “It’s strange that centre-back gets it when his team concedes two, but I’m not making those decisions, we all know how good Dele was.
“We were the better team and had the better individuals today.”
Tottenham now sit sixth in the top-flight standings and face Aston Villa at home on Wednesday. Proceedings will conclude with a trip to FA Cup winners Leicester City next Sunday.
And Mason wants his charges to draw a line under the Wolves result and only look ahead.
“That’s three wins out of four now, we are moving well but there are two massive games coming up,” he added. “We put this out of our minds and move on to Wednesday.”
