Modric wants one club after backfired Real Madrid strategy sparks Prem return talk

Luka Modric is eyeing a return to the Premier League with one specific club after Real Madrid’s contract strategy left the Croatian unhappy in Spain, per a report.

The legendary Croatian was signed by Real Madrid in 2012 to be their answer to Barcelona’s Xavi and Iniesta. The former Tottenham favourite has lived up to those lofty expectations, playing an integral role in four Champions League successes between 2014-18.

However, at 36, the classy midfielder’s time at the Bernabeu may be coming to an end.

That is the view of the Daily Express (citing SuperDeporte) who have shed light on his unhappiness in Madrid, and more importantly, who his next club might be.

Real operate a policy of only offering one-year extensions to players over the age of 30. That has reportedly irked Modric who believes his importance to the club should be better rewarded.

As such, Modric is reportedly ‘open’ to the prospect of returning to England.

Modric previously shone in England with Spurs between 2008-12. However, Tottenham, along with cash-rich Newcastle are set to face disappointment despite both reportedly keeping tabs on his contract situation.

The article states Modric has his gaze firmly fixed on joining Manchester City.

Key to that desire is the side’s connections with other clubs under the City Group umbrella. Modric is stated to be ‘enticed’ by the thought of seeing out his career in America with New York City FC – after a spell in Manchester first.

Whether City have any desire to satisfy Modric’s demands is as yet unclear.

Modric successor at Man Utd?

Meanwhile, Real Madrid have one eye on replacing Modric with Manchester United midfielder Donny Van de Beek.

The Dutchman has endured a torrid 16 months at Old Trafford. Whether the Dutchman will be afforded greater opportunities to shine in the post-Solskjaer era, only time will tell. But if not, an escape route to succeed Modric at the Bernabeu could present an enticing opportunity.

Spanish outlet Fíchájés provided an update on Real Madrid’s burgeoning pursuit of the player earlier in November.

The outlet claimed Real Madrid reckon Van de Beek can become the ‘generational replacement’ for Modric.

Van de Beek could assume the mantle, and the article states United’s mishandling of the Dutchman will warrant a significant price drop from the £35m United paid less than two years ago.

Exactly how much Real would be prepared to bid is unstated. Though even a loss-making bid may be considered at Old Trafford given Van de Beek’s lowly status at present.
