Mohamed Salah’s eye-watering, Liverpool contract renewal demands leaked

Liverpool striker Mo Salah is understood to be chasing a mammoth £500,000-a-week contract to extend his time at Anfield.

The Egypt star has been at Liverpool for four years, but his current deal is set to expire in 2023.

Now the Daily Mirror claim the prolific 29-year-old is demanding an eye-watering salary from Anfield officials.

The prospective new deal Salah is looking for would be more than double his existing £200,000 a week wages.

Per the report, Liverpool are prepared to offer Salah a hefty wage rise, but not anywhere near the £500,000 mark. Salah is already one of Jurgen Klopp’s biggest earners but a move towards £500,000 a week will shatter the club’s pay structure.

It’s unlikely Liverpool will bow to such demands having refused a new deal to 30-year-old Georginio Wijnaldum due to his age.

They have however recently agreed new contracts with a host of first-team stars, including Virgil van Dijk, Alisson and skipper Jordan Henderson.

Those deals have accounted for Liverpool’s recent expenditure, with only £36m defender Ibrahima Konate arriving in the summer.

But “so far there have been no signs that Salah will get his own way”.

Talks over a renewal are underway with the player’s agent Ramy Abbas Isa and Michael Edwards.

And, according to The Athletic’s James Pearce last month, those negotiations have been “productive,” with  “no sense of concern” over the process.

It’s understood Salah’s entourage are chasing a two-year extension and want a figure that reflects his goalscoring at the club.

The former Roma man is one of Liverpool’s all-time top goalscorers. In fact only 11 players have scored more than his tally of 206.

Salah next for new deal

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes Salah will be the next man to agree a new deal on Merseyside.

He told Sky Sports: “It’s not just about Jordan Henderson, it’s about the group of players who have signed long-term contracts.

“I think Liverpool have some of the best players in the world, with Alisson signing a six-year deal and Virgil van Djik. I think Mohamed Salah will be the next one to sign.

“In years gone by, certainly when I was at the club, if we had players of that quality, they would be going to Real Madrid or Barcelona.

“We’ve lost so many players over the years. But the club this year hasn’t spent much in the transfer market.

“We’ve bought [Ibrahima] Konate in for £36m and we’ve certainly recouped that through the sales.

“I think the money and expenditure this pre-season was going to go on new contracts. So that those players can stay at Liverpool for the rest of their careers.

“Jordan’s the latest one and follows Andy Robertson, Fabinho also and I expect Salah to do so.”
