More woe for Van de Beek as Holland rule him out of Euro 2020

Holland’s Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek will miss Euro 2020 through injury.

Van de Beek was ruled out of the tournament on Tuesday, just five days before Holland’s opening Group C fixture against Ukraine in Amsterdam.

The former Ajax man was initially called-up to Frank de Boer’s 26-man squad for the tournament this month.

But the midfielder played no part in either of Netherlands’ warm-up friendlies against Scotland or Georgia last week.

Van de Beek trained separately from the rest of Netherlands’ squad on Monday and has now been ruled out of the tournament.

A statement from KNVB on Tuesday read: “Donny van de Beek has to let the European championship pass by. The Manchester United midfielder is struggling with an injury.

“As a result, the 19-time international, who last played minutes in Orange in March during Gibraltar – Netherlands (0-7), is not available in time for the European Championship. National coach Frank de Boer does not call for a replacement for Van de Beek.”

It caps a terrible season for the 24-year-old, who has struggled at United.

Since making his £35m move from Ajax in September he has made only four Premier League starts for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

The Netherlands kick off their tournament against Ukraine on Sunday before facing Austria (June 17). They wrap up their Group C games against North Macedonia (June 21).

Van de Beek perfect for Liverpool

Meanwhile, Ajax legend Sjaak Swart has claimed his countryman would’ve been better off away from United.

Swart insists he would be the perfect replacement for the outgoing Georginio Wijnaldum at Liverpool.

“He played really great at Ajax, until he left,” said Swart (via SportWitness)

“He was ready for abroad. But at United they have 8 or 9 midfielders, and you have to intervene, then it takes time.

“That is a choice [about his future] he has to make himself, whether he feels like he needs to leave. I am not worried about him.”

“He would fit right in with other clubs. If I look at Liverpool and Wijnaldum is leaving now, he will be a wonderful replacement. Or for Thomas Müller, at Bayern Munich.”
