Mount responds to unwelcome Toni Kroos jibe about Chelsea players

Mason Mount has hit back at Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos after he cruelly mocked about the quality of Chelsea’s stars prior to Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final second leg.

Chelsea booked their place in the final by winning the second leg of their last-four tie with Madrid 2-0. It sealed a 3-1 aggregate win for Thomas Tuchel’s side. He has made a huge impact since taking over in January and the reward will come with a showpiece final against Manchester City.

The Blues were good value for the win. While Madrid had most of the ball, it was Chelsea who carved out the better chances. If anything, the tie should have long been put to bed before Mount struck late on to score the second.

Going into the game, experienced Real midfielder Kroos insisted he did not fear coming to Chelsea. The seasoned Germany star also insisted he ‘did not lose sleep over facing any opposition player and he wasn’t going to start before Chelsea’.

However, Mount hinted Kroos’ comments acted as an extra spur for Chelsea going into the game.

In his post-match interview with CBS Sports, Mount appeared to take exception at Kroos’ comments.

“I saw one of their players say before that he doesn’t lose sleep over individuals” Mount said. “But as a team, they need to lose sleep over us as a team. We give so much, we defend for our lives.

“You saw that in not many chances that we gave away. We are solid and we need to keep that going.”

Speaking later with BT Sport, Mount hailed Chelsea’s display and insisted the margin of victory could have been greater.

“I can’t put it into words, really, at the moment, but it was a great performance tonight, it was a tough, tough game,” Mount said.

“You know what they’re like, they’re going to come and they’re going to give it everything. I thought we were brilliant, we worked hard. We probably should have had about five.”

The Blues will meet City in Istanbul on Saturday May 29.

Mount wanted more chances taken

Mount insists that Chelsea should have made the game safe well before they did.

And he admits there was always that little doubt in their minds until the second goal went in.

“I should have had one about 20 minutes before I scored. The most important thing is that we won tonight. But it’s not over, there’s one more game left.

“It was 1-0 but it didn’t really matter because if they scored, they’re back in the game and we’re going to extra time. To get that one late on, you can see by the celebrations. It was a massive goal for us and it gave us breathing space in the last five minutes.

“I thought Kai’s would have been a brilliant goal if that had gone in. A little kiss off the crossbar, I said to Timo: ‘It must have felt like an eternity, it dropping down and him heading it in’.”
