Mourinho given hope as he bids to bring frustrated Liverpool man to Roma

Jose Mourinho has thrown his hat into the ring to sign out-of-favour Liverpool man Xherdan Shaqiri amid claims he will be allowed to leave Anfield this summer.

Shaqiri has never been a first-team regular since joining Liverpool from Stoke in 2018. He made some important contributions in his first season at Anfield but his output has dropped since. This season, he has only managed to make five Premier League starts.

The Swiss international has not scored a goal in the English top flight since December 2019. In fact, he has only scored once in cup competitions since then.

Still under contract until 2023, Shaqiri is seemingly unhappy with his lack of opportunities. As such, Liverpool are ready to let the playmaker move on.

Despite his lack of action, Shaqiri won’t be short of offers. The likes of Sevilla, Lazio and Fenerbahce are already thought to have expressed an interest.

Now, according to Calcioinpillole, Mourinho is also ready to make a move as he lays down the groundwork at Roma. As per the article, it’s reported that Liverpool have given the former Spurs boss a positive response. However, they have reportedly told the Serie A side they want a straight cash sale, as opposed a loan move.

Furthermore, Liverpool would be seeking a fee similar to the £13.5m they paid Stoke to sign the Swiss star in 2018.

While finances are tight at Roma, that’s a fee probably within their remit. However, his reported £80,000 a week salary may prove an issue and a wage he may need to negotiate on.

Shaqiri open to Italy return

Having played for Inter earlier in his career, Shaqiri himself has opened the door on a shock return to Italy in the past.

“Milan is beautiful. I lived in the city centre, a few steps from the university, and I found myself in a wonderful place.

“I could never speak ill of Italy or Inter. I still remember the welcome their fans gave me on my arrival. It was crazy… unforgettable.

“If I could change anything, it would be the period I was there because I probably joined Inter at the wrong time.

“Today they’re a different club, as is the entire league. The level has increased compared to three years ago.

“Still, I had fun in Serie A and Italy’s an amazing country… you can never say never in football…”
