Mourinho reunion with twist on cards, as Man Utd man offered Serie A deal

Lazio have reportedly offered Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata a two-year contract from next season as his Premier League tenure draws closer to an end.

Mata has proved a fantastic addition to the English top flight since moving to Chelsea in 2011. He spent three years at Stamford Bridge, winning the Champions League, before signing for United. Since then, he has racked up 269 appearances for the Red Devils in seven campaigns.

After signing a new deal in the summer of 2019, though, his game time has continually decreased.

What’s more, despite reports in April suggesting that United could trigger the one-year extension in his contract – taking its expiry date to 2022 – the club have made no such movement yet.

As such, the prospect of Mata staying at Old Trafford is becoming increasingly unlikely.

As for where the 33-year-old could go next, speculation has claimed that he could return to Spain.

According to La Repubblica (via Football Italia) though, Mata could in fact move to Lazio.

The Serie A club have supposedly contacted the player’s agent and offered him a two-year contract. The midfielder could also stay for a third year, per an extension clause.

Furthermore, the contract would be worth €4million per season (£3.5million) per season.

However, Mata reportedly wants €5million (£4.3million) to move to the Rome-based club.

Mata could yet reunite with Mourinho

Nevertheless, should Mata move to Lazio, he could end up reuniting with ex-United boss Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese manager will take the reins at Lazio’s fierce city rivals Roma from next season on a three-year contract.

United, meanwhile, are sticking with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as they look to progress from what will hopefully be a second-placed Premier League finish and a Europa League triumph.
