New Chelsea owners to face defining transfer call as huge Real Madrid raid takes shape

Carlo Ancelotti could give the new Chelsea owners an immediate big decision to make after a report detailed his plans to sign Reece James.

James, 22, has continued to take his game to new heights this season. Operating at either right-back or right-wingback, James has plundered six goals and seven assists across all competitions this year.

The vast bulk of top teams now operate with a creative force in their wide defensive positions.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson have led the way at Liverpool from a Premier League perspective.

Joao Cancelo has been a revelation at Man City, while Chelsea are at their best when Reece James and Ben Chilwell are marauding down the flanks.

And with Cesar Azpilicueta a declining influence, the right side of Chelsea’s defence could be James’ own for the next decade.

However, speculation has begun to swirl over interest brewing up in Spain. Indeed, Real Madrid – coached by ex-Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti – are keen admirers.

The Mirror provide a fresh take on Real’s interest today and it makes for nervy reading for Chelsea fans.

Real Madrid wowed by Reece James

Firstly, it’s stated Ancelotti has placed Reece James ‘high on his list’ of summer targets.

Dani Carvajal is Ancelotti’s current first-choice in the position, though is now the wrong side of 30.

Real have reportedly now watched James in action on nine separate occasions this season. When given the chance to scout him up close and personal in the Champions League quarter-finals, James shone in both legs against Real.

While no transfer figures are mentioned, it’s common sense a James transfer could be a bank-breaker. As such, ‘several’ unnamed players could be axed this summer to fund a shake-up. James would then become a major part of their long-term plans if signed.

The report claims Real are fully aware James would not come cheap. However, they are of the opinion his current high standards are only the tip of the iceberg. Indeed, it’s stated they believe he has ‘many years of steep progression’ ahead.

Of course, Chelsea are currently banned from buying and selling players per the UK Government sanctions. However, once their takeover has been completed, those restrictions will be lifted.

Selling such an accomplished academy graduate who is already operating at an elite level would be unthinkable for most Chelsea fans. He, along with Mason Mount, have the hallmarks of becoming true Chelsea legends if they remain at Stamford Bridge for the long haul.

However, with Real Madrid circling and a monster bid expected, James’ future could rest with Chelsea’s new owners.

It’s noted Thomas Tuchel would be consulted before any exit were sanctioned. However, any decision will ultimately be made by the new owners – whoever they may be.
