New details emerge of ‘serious’ Klopp talks with Robertson about £50m Liverpool transfer

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has held talks with one of his stars about signing John McGinn, but another target has gone off his radar, a report claims.

The Reds are a man lighter in their engine room now after Georginio Wijnaldum’s move to Paris Saint-Germain. Indeed, they will feel the absence of the 30-year-old – who was almost ever-present – greatly. Following his departure, though, differing reports have emerged about Klopp’s plans for his team.

The German manager could reportedly allow Curtis Jones to step up to a more pivotal role next season.

However, he has also looked at bringing in fellow countryman Florian Neuhaus from Borussia Monchengladbach.

According to the Liverpool Echo, though, the Reds have ‘cooled’ their interest in the Germany international.

While Liverpool have tracked Neuhaus for ‘several months’, his release clause – worth £34.25million – expired at the end of May. As such, Monchengladbach would now want a much higher fee.

With that, the chances of Liverpool signing him have diminished, the newspaper adds.

Neuhaus has also had transfer links with a move to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

However, the 24-year-old publicly denied those rumours, insisting that he feels happy at Monchengladbach. Neuhaus has yet to play for Germany at their Euro 2020 campaign.

Nevertheless, the Liverpool Echo reports that Liverpool are ‘keeping tabs’ on other midfield targets. Aston Villa’s McGinn is reportedly another star on Klopp’s transfer radar.

According to a separate report from The Athletic, the Anfield club have ‘very real interest’ in the Scotland international.

In fact, Klopp reportedly spoke to Reds left-back Andy Robertson about his fellow Scotsman.

Klopp talks over Liverpool transfer

The pair supposedly spoke about McGinn after he helped Villa defeat Liverpool 7-2 in September. Klopp asked the ‘serious’ question – which reportedly came across as ‘funny’ – of whether the midfielder stops running on a match day.

Robertson then met up with McGinn a day later on international duty, where they discussed Klopp’s talks.

The Athletic adds that some of Liverpool’s other players were impressed with the midfielder’s performance.

McGinn played 37 of 38 Premier League games last season, chipping in with three goals and six assists.

Should Liverpool up their interest, though, they would need to pay at least £50million to sign McGinn.
