New favourite emerges as Roy Hodgson rejects West Brom advances

Roy Hodgson has rejected a proposal from West Brom of a return to the dugout at The Hawthorns, it has been claimed.

The 73-year-old left Crystal Palace last month after four years with the Eagles. His contract was not extended after he made the decision to step away from managing in the Premier League. However, he has not opted to retire.

Consequently, as per Football Insider, West Brom contacted their former boss to enquire if he’d be interested in taking up their vacant managerial position, but they have not received their desired answer.

Football Insider report that Hodgson is keen to take a break from working for the time being and has no interest in taking up a new job immediately.

The Baggies are manager-less after Sam Allardyce left the club having failed to preserve their Premier League status.

Hodgson was in charge of the Midlands side from February 2011 to May 2012 and secured them their highest league finish for 30 years.

The 10th place he achieved earned him the England job which he held for over four years until the conclusion of Euro 2016.

It’s clear to see why he was on Albion’s shortlist of potential candidates, but they will have to look elsewhere as they prepare for their return to the Championship.

The new favourite for the role appears to be Lincoln City manager Michael Appleton.

Appleton left his role as under-23 coach at the Baggies to join the Imps in 2019, and now could rejoin the club as first-team boss.

He narrowly missed out on promotion to the Championship with Lincoln this season, losing to Blackpool in the play-off final.

Wilder still in with a chance

Now that the bosses at The Hawthorns have discovered Hodgson’s intentions it remains to be seen if they could open the door to Chris Wilder.

Football Insider reported last week that the club had called off plans to appoint Wilder, despite the 53-year-old being extremely keen on filling the position.

However, a report from the Express and Star has since suggested the former Sheffield United boss is still an option.

With Hodgson now crossed off the list, Wilder could be back in the frame.
