New hope for Liverpool and Man Utd over ideal in-demand Italian sensation

Liverpool and Manchester United have received fresh hope of signing an Italy international who would benefit both clubs, according to a report.

The two giants of English football had a similar issue in the recent transfer window. That was, they didn’t address their need for a new central midfielder. The Reds let Georginio Wijnaldum leave without securing a replacement, while United allowed their search to continue for another few months.

They did both take an interest in the same player who would fill the gap in their squad, though, to no avail.

The man in question was Nicolo Barella of Inter Milan. The 24-year-old was an important part of the Italy squad that won Euro 2020.

He had also won Serie A with Inter so had a good few months all round. His club’s financial difficulties, however, have put several of their players’ futures in doubt, his included.

Barella joined the club in 2020 but already has less than three years remaining on his contract at the San Siro.

As such, Inter were preparing to push the boat out to tie him down to a new deal, as per a report from last month.

However, their aforementioned money struggles seemed to have scuppered these plans.

That’s because according to Corriere dello Sport, the Italian club are having a tough time trying to meet his wage demands.

It is reported the player wants a salary of €6m a year. So far, Inter have only mustered up an offer of €4m.

Barella’s representatives are not getting close to reaching a compromise with the Italian side. If this remains the case, there is a good chance he could be sold.

This will no doubt attract the attention of Liverpool and United, as a number of top clubs have been keeping tabs. This latest report claims Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are keen on the midfielder.

Barella deal would be a costly one

A move would certainly not come cheap. Earlier this year a value of £60m was placed on his head.

However, that was before his exploits for his country in the summer. He has also started the new season brightly.

In seven league games he has scored once and assisted five times. He is well on his way to improving his return of three goals and 10 assists from last season.

And he also bagged for Italy in their third place Nations League play-off match against Belgium to help them to a 2-1 win.

Inter paid over £40m to sign him from Cagliari. They could double their investment and more if they are forced to cash in.
