New option opens up for Daniel Levy as Tottenham old boy pleads for job
Jurgen Klinsmann has revealed he has contacted Daniel Levy to register his interest in becoming the new Tottenham manager – and insists the club will always be “in his heart”.
Levy has again been forced to go back to the drawing board in his search for Jose Mourinho’s successor. The Portuguese was sacked back in April after a difficult spell in charge. However, appointing his successor has proved far from easy.
After drawing early blanks with Julian Nagelsmann and Hansi Flick, Spurs were linked to Mauricio Pochettino and Antonio Conte.
Levy then looked like he’d found his man in Paulo Fonseca.
However, Spurs decided against the Portuguese before then holding talks with Gennaro Gattuso. Levy, though, also chose against giving the Italian firebrand the gig.
Now, with options wearing thin, Klinsmann has once again thrown his hat into the ring.
The 56-year-old, who has managed the United States, Bayern Munich and Germany, had two spells as a player with Spurs during the 1990s. He remains a popular figure with the fans.
Klinsmann rang chairman Levy when Mourinho was sacked, but did not hear back.
Not to be discouraged, he told the BBC he remains up for the job in north London.
“I called him after he let Mourinho go and said ‘Daniel, what’s the case now?” Klinsmann said.
“And he said to me ‘I have so much to do right now to sort things out at the club, let’s talk a little later on’. Then I saw all the different names walking in, talking and walking out. The same still today.
“Spurs are in my heart, I would consider that – but if he doesn’t want to, I am not going to force him.”
Klinsmann’s last job was with Bundesliga outfit Hertha Berlin. However, he left after three months in February 2020 and has not worked since.
Paratici targets Serie A striker
Meanwhile, new Tottenham managing director Fabio Paratici is already looking back to Serie A for potential transfer targets, with one striker in particular now reportedly on his radar.
Paratici has a big rebuilding job to do after joining Tottenham from Juventus. Not only does he have a new head coach to appoint, he will oversee their summer transfer activity. One of the biggest tasks in that department will be resolving the future of Harry Kane. Levy remains desperate to keep the England captain.
It is claimed that Paratici could prompt Tottenham to target Dusan Vlahovic of Fiorentina. The Serbian striker is only 21 years old but is already one of the most dangerous attackers in Serie A.
Only Cristiano Ronaldo, Romelu Lukaku and Luis Muriel outscored the Fiorentina frontman in the Italian top flight last season. With 21 goals from 37 games, he scored at a better rate than many of the league’s other prominent strikers.
