Newcastle ‘looking promising’ as pundit changes mind over relegation

“Team morale” at Newcastle will be through the roof and they are “looking promising” in their fight against relegation, says one pundit.

Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor thought Newcastle would get relegated, but he is having a rethink on that. After Newcastle’s crucial 1-0 win over Leeds last time out, Eddie Howe’s men set off for Saudi Arabia.

The first-team squad have moved to warmer weathers with Howe overseeing their training.

The success in West Yorkshire left the Geordies just a point away from safety. Sitting in 18th place, Howe’s men have 15 points, just a solitary point behind Norwich, with Everton a further three points ahead.

The lift that Newcastle received at Elland Road, combined with their warm-weather training, has changed the landscape at St James’ Park.

“It was a massive win, especially for team morale,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider.

“If they had lost to Leeds it would have been a moody, strict trip. Now they’ve won that game it can be a bit more relaxed. They can have a few days to rest after such an intense schedule.

Newcastle have a ‘big chance’

“Then they can get to work and Eddie Howe can get his ideas across.”

Howe has added Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood into the squad and he is desperately looking for a centre-back.

“Newcastle are looking promising. I thought they would go down but bringing in Trippier and Wood, they are showing that fight and spirit. They’ve got every chance of staying up.

“When you look at Watford, when you look at Norwich, when you look at Burnley and if Newcastle can get a couple of more players in and Callum Wilson back there is a big chance of staying up.”
