‘Not the club I played for’ – Keane calls out Manchester United disarray with two players put in embarrassing spotlight
Manchester United have been allowed to fall too far and are becoming unrecognisable as a club, according to some respected pundits.
The downfall that Manchester United have suffered in recent years was emphasised again with a 4-0 defeat to Liverpool on Tuesday. In both meetings with their rivals this season, they have failed to score and have conceded heavily.
It means Champions League qualification is now in serious doubt ahead of the appointment of a new manager in the summer. A major rebuild may be required if Manchester United are to get back where they belong.
At present, that feels far away. There was a gulf in quality between them and their foes in the defeat to Liverpool.
Former Man Utd captain Roy Keane felt that pain. He has long been critical of the direction they are heading in.
His latest dissection of their downfall covered all aspects of the club, where there need to be big changes. In its current state, Keane cannot recognise it as his former side.
Keane told Sky Sports: “It’s not anger now, it’s sadness. There are no leaders, they lack quality.
“There is disarray at the club from the top. They need a new manager, they need players in and players out. It’s so sad to see.
“It’s not the club I played for, it’s chalk and cheese. I don’t see a Manchester United team out there fighting and with pride.”
He added: “There’s no surprise at the result. Over the two games this season it’s 9-0 to Liverpool. United are so far off it – the opposite of what you want in a top team.
“There is no leadership, no characters, no fight, no determination. It’s a long way back for this club. Whatever we had when I played – that bit of pride – has gone.”
And Keane wasn’t afraid to call out some of the culprits, claiming: “[Jesse] Lingard is not good enough for Manchester United… [Marcus] Rashford played like a child.”
Souness can’t see any Manchester United player at Liverpool
And according to ex-Liverpool midfielder Graeme Souness, no Man Utd player would get into the opposite team.
Souness told Sky Sports: “Under pressure Manchester United just couldn’t keep the ball. If you come to Anfield and want to have any chance of getting a result you have to be able to keep the ball and they just couldn’t do that.
“This is a truly fabulous Liverpool team and they are on the brink of true greatness.
“There isn’t a Manchester United player that would get in this Liverpool team. United are a truly enormous club but how far they’ve been allowed to drift was exposed tonight.”
