Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo was disappointed by the manner of his side’s defeat to Tottenham and has demanded a reaction.

The West Midlanders were second best throughout the contest and succumbed to goals from Harry Kane and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. England skipper Kane pounced on the stroke of half-time to give the hosts the lead. He rounded Wolves keeper Rui Patricio and slotted home after an excellent pass from Hojbjerg.

And the Dane turned from provider to goalscorer on 62 minutes as he bagged the all-important second. Gareth Bale’s shot was kept out by Patricio but Hojbjerg was on hand to bury the rebound.

The margin of victory could have been greater, with Kane and Dele Alli both striking the post in the same move. But Wolves were generally lethargic and Nuno admitted his frustration after the final whistle.

“It was a difficult game. Large parts of the game we played good and were organised, good possession,” he told Sky Sports. “Couple of mistakes. But a tough game. We have to analyse but I’m disappointed with the manner we conceded, too easy.

“It was almost the end of the first half [first goal]. We were open and allowed a pass to break the lines. We had poor finishing, half-chances.”

Wolves ‘on the beach’

There was certainly an air of it being a late-season game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Spurs still had plenty to play for, with the outside possibility of finishing in the top four.

It seems more likely that they will qualify for the Europa League but for Wolves there is now just pride to play for. A tough season in which they have been shorn of striker Raul Jimenez since November seems to be catching up with them.

There was a lack of urgency and quality throughout the ranks although Conor Coady was immense at the back. He did his chances of making Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad no harm at all.

But Nuno has urged his charges to dig deep for their remaining fixtures to ensure they end on a high note.

“We have to improve. We have two tough games to go,” he added. “We have to react and keep on building and bringing the young players who are starting their careers.”

The Molineux outfit face a trip to Goodison Park to take on Everton on Wednesday. And their season will conclude when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brings his Manchester United side to the Black Country next Sunday.
