Nuno on mission to derail Benitez early on, offering star standout Tottenham role
New Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo reportedly has come up with a transfer plan to convince former Wolves colleague Conor Coady to reject Everton.
After time off following his exit from Molineux in May, Nuno now has a big summer on his hands. The Portuguese became Spurs’ new head coach on Wednesday, ending the club’s long search. With Tottenham struggling to a seventh-placed finish last season, though, Nuno has it all to do to get his team back up the table.
The manager will need key transfer arrivals if he is to get Spurs back on the right track, with centre-back Coady previously linked.
Indeed, Nuno reportedly mentioned the England Euro 2020 star as a target in initial talks about moving to north London.
However, Everton – who similarly confirmed Rafael Benitez as their new boss on Wednesday – are also in the hunt.
According to Football Insider, the two sides are now ready to enter a ‘bidding war’ for Coady.
With such strong interest from higher up in the Premier League, Wolves are reportedly somewhat resigned to losing their captain, especially given the stellar service he has offered since 2015.
Nevertheless, the Molineux club are seeking a ‘massive fee’ for the player.
Everton and Tottenham are both after centre-back signings this summer. Football Insider, though, claims that Spurs will likely bring in two new additions.
What’s more, Nuno reportedly plans to derail Benitez’s early transfer plans at Goodison Park.
The Tottenham boss will supposedly offer Coady the same standout role he played throughout the pair’s time together at Wolves.
Nuno became Wolves boss in 2017, from which point Coady only missed two league games before the manager’s exit.
Indeed he missed only one match as Wolves earned promotion from the Championship in 2017/18. From there, he played every Premier League game for two seasons, missing his first last term.
Nuno offers exciting Tottenham message
Speaking in his first interview as Tottenham manager, Nuno insisted that he is looking forward to the challenge ahead.
The 47-year-old said: “When you have a squad with quality and talent, we want to make the fans proud and enjoy.
“It’s an enormous pleasure and honour (to be here); there’s joy and I’m happy and looking forward to starting work.
“We don’t have any days to lose and we must start working immediately as pre-season starts in a few days.”
