Old allegiances cast aside as Chelsea join Everton in hunt for top keeper

Wojciech Szczesny could be an option for Chelsea or Everton as they look to strengthen in goal, according to reports in Italy.

Szczesny may have been inconsistent the last time he was in the Premier League with Arsenal. But since he headed to Serie A, first on loan with Roma before becoming a permanent Juventus player, he has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

But Juventus appear to be preparing for a future without him and that could mean his future may be back in England.

According to Tuttosport, Juventus are ready to sell Szczesny so they can sign Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Italian is out of contract with AC Milan, so would be a shrewd signing for Juve.

Szczesny would not be content as a backup, though, so may be placed on the market. In that event, a return to the Premier League could be on the cards.

It is claimed that Chelsea and Everton have both carried out enquiries to see if Szczesny would be open to joining them. Intermediaries have been exploring how much he would be willing to return to England.

Everton are looking for a more reliable number one than Jordan Pickford next season. They signed Robin Olsen on loan to provide competition this term, but next year, could look for someone who would be an upgrade on the England regular.

Szczesny would certainly be that, having won the Serie A Goalkeeper of the Year award last season.

Chelsea, though, are also in the market for a new goalkeeper. It seems unfair on Edouard Mendy, who has done well since his arrival last summer.

But with the Blues trying to find a buyer for Kepa Arrizabalaga, they could replace him with Szczesny. It would prompt a competitive battle for the starting berth.

For now, Szczesny is happy to stay in Turin, where he has been settled since 2017. However, if they sign Donnarumma – who coincidentally has also been linked with Chelsea – he may have to consider his options.

He could also have admirers in Germany, but a return to the Premier League could give him the chance to prove a point.

Everton eye second Juve star

If he was to choose a move to Merseyside, Szczesny could be followed by one of his Juve teammates.

According to Il Bianconero, Everton are contenders for the signature of former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey.

Ramsey has reportedly told Juventus he wants to return to the Premier League. Everton are said to have made a “serious and intriguing” offer for him to consider.

However, it is not clear if that interest is mutual. In fact, the report adds that the only move Ramsey would “immediately” accept would be a return to Arsenal.
