Pogba diverts focus after responding to Man Utd contract rumour, PSG links

Paul Pogba has distanced himself from reports that Manchester United had opened talks over a contract extension.

The midfielder is entering the final 12 months of his contract at Old Trafford, where he has been since returning from Juventus in 2016. His outspoken agent Mino Raiola has cast doubt on his chances of signing an extension, strongly suggesting a transfer.

Pogba’s personal stance is less clear cut. He performed well on the pitch after Raiola’s outburst, helping United to a second-place finish in the Premier League as well as reaching the Europa League final.

But it hasn’t taken long for his future to come into focus again after the season’s end. He has already been linked with a return to Juventus, or a new challenge elsewhere. For example, Real Madrid, Barcelona or Paris Saint-Germain could all be suitors.

Amid the lingering interest from fellow European giants, Manchester United will be trying to tie him down to a new contract.

It was recently claimed that they were fearful of losing him, so would discuss his future after Euro 2020. But Sky Sports claimed earlier on Thursday that they had already opened talks.

Pogba appears to have quashed that rumour fairly quickly, though, after providing an update on his future.

“I have one year left on my contract, everyone knows that,” he is quoted as saying by RMC Sport.

“There have been no concrete proposals for extensions. I’m still in Manchester.

“After the season there was the vacation, so I didn’t sit down with the managers and coach. I’m focused on the Euro.”

Pogba plays down PSG rumour

While with the France setup, Pogba was pressed further on links with Ligue 1 powerhouses PSG.

But he was equally coy about the speculation and said he was leaving everything in Raiola’s hands.

“Contacts with Paris? I have an agent that deals with all that,” he said. “I don’t have [PSG president] Nasser [Al-Khelaifi]’s number.

“My only thought, now, is the Euros. I’m focused.

“I’ve got more experience than before. I’m focused on the present, the Euros.”

Pogba helped France to World Cup glory in 2018 and will be hoping to follow it up with more major tournament success.

But it seems the focus on his club future will be following him around all summer – or at least until there is more clarity.
