Potter ‘not sorry’ for pinching a point as Brighton miss chance to go top

Graham Potter refused to apologise for his side pinching a point at Crystal Palace on Monday night as the Seagulls missed the chance to go top of the Premier League.

Palace took the lead on the stroke of half-time with Wilfried Zaha continuing his fine record against the visitors. Conor Gallagher won the Eagles a spot-kick when Leonard Trossard brought the Chelsea loanee down following a driving run into the penalty area.

Despite usual spot-kick taker Luka Milivojevic being on the pitch, Zaha took responsibility and sent Robert Sanchez the wrong way to make it 1-0 at the break with his eighth goal against the Seagulls.

However, Neal Maupay rescued a point for Brighton at the death with virtually the last kick of the game.

Pascal Gross’ simple ball over the top caught out the Eagles defence and Maupay produced a superb lob over Vicente Guaita to make it 1-1.

Referee Andre Marriner blew for full time soon after before James McArthur and Seagulls keeper Sanchez squared up after the whistle had been blown with the spoils shared in south London.

Speaking after the match, Potter told BBC Sport: “When you’re 1-0 down going into the 96th minute and you score it feels like a win. It isn’t, it’s just a point but it’s a well-earned point.

“It was a tight game. Nothing too much in it and we pushed in the second half and it’s an amazing feeling to get the equaliser.

When asked if his side did not really show what they are capable of, Potter added: “I think that’s credit to the opponent. They did what they did well.

“First half there weren’t too many chances. They go ahead with a penalty. Second half I can’t remember too much either. It was an even game if you look at the stats. I’m not going to be apologising for our point.”

On Brighton’s start to the season, the Seagulls chief said: “The spirit is amazing. The togetherness of the team. the character of the team. It’s all the things you need.”
