Potter outlines Brighton commitment; hints at fresh deal for striker
Manager Graham Potter insists he is fully committed to Brighton despite links to the Tottenham job and hinted Danny Welbeck will still be with him next season.
The 46-year-old took over at the Amex Stadium in May 2019 and guided them to a 15th place finish last season. They are currently 16th with one game to play. And victory over Arsenal on Sunday will see them better last season’s tally of 41 points.
Potter has been roundly praised for his work on the south coast, keeping an unfashionable club in the top flight. And he has done it on a shoestring budget compared to the big boys in the division.
The former Swansea chief is one of the names that has been mentioned in connection with the permanent position at Spurs. Ryan Mason is in temporary charge after Jose Mourinho’s sacking but is unlikely to get the job full time.
Potter remains among the favourites to move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. But he has made it clear that he has not even thought about north London.
“I don’t pay too much attention to things that are outside of my control, things that get written, or speculation,” he said. “I am focused on this job, trying to finish the season off as strongly as we can. I am excited by the team, I am excited by the club, so I just focus on that.
“It (the Tottenham job) is nothing I have considered. I have got a contract here. I am committed to this, we’ve got a lot to do, we’re just at the start of what we’re doing.”
Potter hopeful over Welbeck deal
Potter’s deal runs until 2025 but striker Welbeck will be out of contact this summer. The England man penned a one-year deal in October after being released by Watford.
He has struggled with injury at times in 2020-2021 but managed to bag six goals from 24 Premier League outings. He is not fit to face the Gunners at the weekend.
But Potter confessed that the former Manchester United man is valued by the club and in line for a new deal.
“Danny, it will be too soon for him but he will take the break for the summer and be ready for pre-season,” he added. “That (a new contract) is something the club will be speaking with Danny about and they are speaking.
“We are happy with what Danny’s done and he’s contributed to us.”
