Paris Saint-Germain are suddenly considering a dramatic finale to the transfer window by targeting Erling Haaland, according to reports.
PSG are bracing themselves for the departure of Kylian Mbappe, for whom Real Madrid have made an improved offer. The French club thought their work in the transfer window would be enough to convince the World Cup winner to stay. However, with one year left on his contract, it seems his heart is set on a move to Madrid.
Real are ready to match what PSG spent on Mbappe when signing him from Monaco in 2017. It would be an astonishing bit of business for a player in his contractual position, no matter his talent.
Although Paris have already lured in one of the sport’s all-time greats in Lionel Messi, they are likely to look for a replacement for Mbappe too – and it will be a big name.
Despite the possibility of teaming the two best players on the planet up by signing Cristiano Ronaldo, it appears they have no intention of doing so. With Ronaldo seemingly set for a return to Manchester – this time with Man City – PSG are prioritising other names.
Sensationally, reports are claiming that they are planning a bid for Haaland as and when Mbappe leaves.
Many expect Haaland and Mbappe to dominate world football in a post-Messi and Ronaldo era. Therefore, PSG could look to replace one with the other.
Haaland has an astonishing goals record for Borussia Dortmund, who have been determined to keep him for another season. Next summer, a release clause will be active in his contract that looks appealing for many of Europe’s biggest clubs.
But PSG could try to steal a march on the competition by bidding for Haaland in the frantic final days of the transfer window.
PSG in contact with Raiola
According to the Daily Telegraph, Paris are in contact with Haaland’s agent Mino Raiola. A deal would be difficult, but they feel the windfall they receive from selling Mbappe will give them enough funds to tempt Dortmund into selling for around £150m. It may hinge on the Germans being able to quickly find a replacement, though.
It would come as a blow for several Premier League clubs interested in Haaland. Manchester United and Manchester City have both been looking into a deal for next summer, supposedly, while Chelsea were keen before spending on Romelu Lukaku instead. Liverpool have also been linked and even suggested as the favourites by some.
Whoever gets Haaland next will be securing someone who can become one of the best players of a generation. If he ends up in the French capital, it would cap off a spectacular summer for them.
In addition to Messi, they have signed Gianluigi Donnarumma, Sergio Ramos and Georginio Wijnaldum on free transfers. They also splashed the cash on Achraf Hakimi.
