Pundit destroys Antonio Conte tactics after shock Tottenham loss opes up top-four race again

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright laid into Antonio Conte’s tactics after Tottenham were stunned 1-0 at home by Brighton in the Premier League top-four race on Saturday.

In a lacklustre game in north London, a well-taken 90th-minute winner from Seagulls forward Leandro Trossard resulted in the visitors surprisingly claiming all three points.

The result was a bitter blow to Spurs’ chances of securing Champions League football. However, they were boosted later on Saturday after north London rivals Arsenal lost at Southampton.

Manchester United did move level on points with Tottenham, however, after they beat Norwich 3-2.

As an attacking force, Spurs were truly woeful against a disciplined Brighton defence. Indeed, they registered just five shots and none on target. That came off of a four-game winning run, that included a 2-0 victory at Graham Potter’s side in March.

Speaking on Premier League Productions post-match, Wright blasted the Tottenham display. He focused on their tactical shortcomings, stating: “I can’t understand the tactics today, they played like an away side.

Tottenham changed their style

“They weren’t passing through the lines, Harry Kane wasn’t coming short, they weren’t pressing Brighton high to win the ball in the last third, to win the ball in those high areas to then attack them and it was very confusing when you consider what they’ve done leading into this game.

“But Brighton showed that little bit of class in the end and they won the game.”

Conte’s side will be looking to bounce back when they head to Brentford for a London derby next weekend. However, it’s fair to say that the Spurs boss was not happy with his side’s display against Brighton.

The Bees are in a decent run of form, having won five of their last six games, and saw off Watford 2-1 on Saturday.
