Pundit hails Wolves star ‘very useful’ but may deal side crucial blow

Garth Crooks has hailed Wolves’ Romain Saiss for his top performances of late, but thinks he will deal his side a cruel blow soon.

Wolves have been defensively solid for the entire season to date. Indeed, only Manchester City and Chelsea have conceded less goals than the Midlands side in the league.

Saiss, playing at centre-back, has obviously contributed to the solid defence. His performances in the position all the more impressive considering he has played as a defensive-midfielder for the majority of his career.

Crooks has hailed Saiss as an exceptional talent. What’s more, he was worthy of a place in the pundit’s team of the week.

“It’s not the first time Saiss has made my team of the week. The last time I selected him he also scored at Molineux but I’m not sure he played as well as he did against Brighton,” he said.

Indeed, Saiss’ goal away against Brighton was enough to take three points back to Molineux. Furthermore, it gained Saiss the man of the match award.

“His goal at the Amex Stadium was brilliantly dispatched, especially for a centre-back, and his strike that hit the post deserved better,” Crooks said.

“Only Raul Jimenez and Ruben Neves have scored more Premier League goals for Wolves since the start of last season than Saiss [five].”

Indeed, Saiss’ goalscoring returns highlight his importance to the side. His composure in front of goal also stands Wolves in good stead, knowing they can score from all areas.

Saiss also has tremendous defensive capabilities, and is therefore of major importance to Wolves at both ends of the pitch.

Saiss at the peak of his powers

Crooks feels that Saiss is in the form of his life, although AFCON presents an issue for Wolves.

“The Morocco international is playing as well as I’ve seen him play. He also played his part in gaining a very useful point against Chelsea on Sunday. All good news for his country, but perhaps not for Wolves as they are about to lose him to the Africa Cup of Nations at the end of the month,” he said.

Indeed, missing a crucial player for a month is a big blow for Wolves. However, a host of Premier League sides will be faced with the same issue come January.

What’s more, if Saiss continues his rich vein of form, Wolves will be given a massive boost one he returns.
