Quick-fire signing makes sense as Atletico Madrid locked in talks with Aston Villa star

Atletico Madrid are in talks with Aston Villa ace Matty Cash over a permanent transfer this summer, claims a report.

Cash, who was recently capped by Poland, has developed significantly at Villa Park. The 24-year-old right-back has more than 50 appearances after signing in September 2020 from Nottingham Forest for £14m.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone is searching for a full-back to replace Kieran Trippier following his £12m move to Newcastle. And The Sun report that ‘sources in Spain claim that Cash is one of the LaLiga club’s top targets.

Atletico will wait until the summer before pushing a deal through for Cash. And they are willing to pay in the region of £30m to £40m for the Slough-born defender.

That will make Villa a sizeable profit on a player who is under contract until 2025.

Cash is said to be keen on a transfer to the LaLiga champions and the transfer is deemed “likely” by the tabloid.

Villa boss Steven Gerrard is more than likely aware of the situation. He has already drafted in Calum Chambers from Arsenal.

Chambers to replace Cash?

That deal came out of the blue. There were no links with Chambers until the transfer was announced by both clubs on Thursday evening.

The transfer is a permanent one, with Chambers has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract until 2025.

Capable of playing at right-back or centre-half, he could well be the replacement for Cash.

The speed of the deal could well point to Atletico making a move for Cash in the next few days. It’s a prospect the source “can’t be completely ruled out”.

Gerrard though will be eager to hang on to the player until the summer. He has played a key part in Villa’s defence this season and registered 23 appearances across all competitions.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid have announced the signature of Daniel Wass. Los Rojiblancos have signed the Danish international from Valencia on a contract that will run until the summer of 2023.

But Wass, who can fill in at right-back, is primarily a midfielder.
