Rangers told future of star man Morelos hinges on trio of major factors this summer

Rangers have been told that the future of star striker Alfredo Morelos depends on several key factors coming to fruition this summer.

The Colombian forward’s contract runs out at the end of next summer, meaning the upcoming transfer window will be the last realistic opportunity for the Ibrox outfit to recoup a significant fee for the 25-year-old.

Morelos himself could decide to wait until next January and sign a pre-contract with a foreign club. That scenario would be the very worst one for Rangers, if it played out.

The attacker, who currently earns £33,000-a-week, has scored 113 goals in 224 appearances for the club. He is also their all-time record scorer in European competition.

Former Ibrox favourite Nacho Nova has already urged Rangers to ‘do something very soon’ to keep the ‘incredible’ performer.

But Sky Sports pundit Danny Mills believes there are several factors at play to keep Morelos on board.

He told Football Insider: “It will depend on where Rangers finish in the league, what happens in the Europa League and what that means for their finances.

“Then what happens with Giovanni van Bronckhorst going forwards? There is a lot in the mix at Rangers and it depends on these next few weeks, effectively.

“If they finish behind Celtic, how far will they finish behind Celtic? Can they turn it around in the Europa League?

Mills also warned the Glasgow giants they may have to sell Morelos to bolster their squad, although Champions League qualification could convince him to stay.

Rangers need Morelos plan

He added: “What is the plan going forward?. Do they need to sell a player like that to get some money to help bring players in?

“If they were to overtake Celtic and win the league, get in the Champions League with all that money they might be able to keep him and he will want to play in the Champions League.

“If not, they might need to reassess the situation.”

There currently have two routes to secure Champions League football.

The first involves overhauling Celtic’s six-point lead at the top of the table, which looks unlikely. The second is to win the Europa League.

Van Bronckhorst’s men are currently 1-0 down after the first leg of their quarter-final clash with Braga. They take on the Portuguese outfit on Thursday night at Ibrox for a place in the semis.

As for Morelos, several clubs in England have been tipped to make a move for the prolific striker.

Newcastle, Leicester and Everton have all been linked with the player, who will miss the remainder of the season with a thigh injury.
