Reported Arsenal boss target officially looking for next role

Reported Arsenal boss target Paulo Fonseca will leave his job in Serie A this summer.

Roma head coach Fonseca will part company with the Italian giants at the end of the season, the Serie A club have announced. The Giallorossi have picked up just one point from their last four league games. They sit seventh in the table, nine points behind sixth-placed Lazio with four matches remaining. Fonseca’s side also trail 6-2 in their Europa League semi-final against Manchester United heading into Thursday’s second leg in the Italian capital.

The 48-year-old signed a two-year contract with Roma in the summer of 2019. He joined from Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk where he won the league and cup double in all three of his seasons in charge.

Roma president Dan Friedkin said in a statement on the club website: “On behalf of everyone at AS Roma, we would like to thank Paulo Fonseca for the hard work and leadership shown during these two years.

“Paulo led the team through several challenges, including the Covid pandemic and a change of ownership. And he did so with generosity, fairness and great character.

“We wish him all the best in his future endeavours. We are confident that he will represent fantastic added value wherever he goes.”

Fonseca’s name has been linked with a number of clubs in England, namely Arsenal and Crystal Palace.

The first cracks of Mikel Arteta’s reign have emerged with The Sun, recently revealing a “growing resentment from players” at The Emirates.

Italian website TuttoMercatoWeb also claim that the Arsenal hierarchy are “not happy with Arteta”.

The Arsenal board are reportedly unhappy with Arteta’s progress with the Gunners and are already thinking about replacements. Arteta’s last chance of silverware this season is in Europe’a second competition.

Only glory in Europe will mask their terrible time in the Premier League. Arteta’s side sit 10th and are not in contention to finish in the top six.

Leeds interest

The Italian source even stated Fonseca is “one of the options left on the shortlist”.

Palace meanwhile, are on the lookout for a replacement for Roy Hodgson. The 73-year-old will be out of contract in the summer and has so far not revealed any desire to discuss his future.

Leeds have also been mentioned as potential suitors should Marcelo Bielsa call it time at Elland Road.

At this stage, Bielsa is expected to stay with the Whites. But it appears Leeds have a plan in place should he decide otherwise.

According to Sport Italia’s Gianluigi Longari (via MOT Leeds News), Fonseca is a man Leeds may turn to.
