Rival example cited as Man Utd sent bold advice over perceived weak link

Manchester United have been urged to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer if they are to win the Premier League title by a pundit citing one of their rivals as an example.

United have made steady progress under Solskjaer over the past few years, without any silverware to show for it. Cup semi-finals seemed like an impassable hurdle until they reached the final of the Europa League last season. But after losing that on penalties, they are having to wait a little longer for the glory days to return.

There is some optimism growing at Old Trafford that this could be their year. The signings of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane will reinforce areas of concern in the squad with world-class options. They may still have more deals in the pipeline, too.

But even with the way they have strengthened, there are still question marks about their ability to compete for titles under Solskjaer. The club legend was a surprise appointment when replacing Jose Mourinho on an interim basis in 2018, but did well enough to earn the job full-time.

He has now been sent a stern warning, though, by former Premier League player Jamie O’Hara. The pundit thinks Solskjaer’s job may be at risk if Man Utd are to reach the next level.

“Looking at the way Chelsea do their business; they’re ruthless,” O’Hara told talkSPORT.

“They’re ruthless with managers. Frank Lampard, a club legend, put a team together and didn’t quite get results, sixth in the league, wasn’t good enough.

“So they get rid of him, get Thomas Tuchel in and they win the Champions League… with the same players!

“They are ruthless in their business.

“Now, I look at a club like Manchester United – are they undervaluing themselves?

“I look at their squad now, with Jadon Sancho, they’re bringing in Raphael Varane, they’ve got Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw – that’s a top, top side that they have put together.

“But I still think they’re miles off it in terms of winning the Premier League, because of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“Do they need to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and be ruthless like Chelsea?

“I think they need to go, ‘right, this is the way forward now’, because Chelsea seem to win and get results by working that way.”

Man Utd face further questions

It is not the first time recently that United have been questioned over their decision making.

While they have had what seems like a successful transfer market, another pundit has insisted they have got one deal wrong…
