Ruthless Arsenal run out of patience with top star; five more up for sale

Arsenal are reportedly ready to have a ruthless overhaul of their squad this summer, with goalkeeper Bernd Leno set to be a major casualty.

The Gunners have had a disastrous campaign and currently sit in ninth place in the Premier League table. They also crashed out of the Europa League at the semi-stage, as old boss Unai Emery sank them with his Villarreal side last week.

However, despite reports that Mikel Arteta is close to being shown the door, the Spaniard still has the backing of the Emirates hierarchy.

To that end, the club’s owners are ready to spend big this summer, as they also look to make amends for the failed European Super League bid.

According to Football.London, Arteta is ready to put six players in all up for sale to fund new additions.

Perhaps the most surprising of the six is Leno, with Arteta appearing to run out patience with the error-strewn stopper.

The Gunners have already been linked with Ajax star Andre Onana as his replacement, Indeed, the reports suggest they could get the player, who is coming to the end of a 12-month ban for a doping violation, for just £7million. Lille’s Mike Maignan also remains as an alternative option.

Long-serving right-back Hector Bellerin is also set to leave, having endured an inconsistent campaign.

Loan quartet set for exits

A quartet of players who spent the past season out on loan will also be moved on. Lucas Torreira, Matteo Guendouzi, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Sead Kolasinac are the men in question.

The report adds that Arsenal want at least £15m for both Torreira and Guendouzi. Maitland-Niles, meanwhile, could also fetch a decent fee.

Youngsters Joe Willock and Reiss Nelson could also be shown the door, with the former impressing at Newcastle this term.

The club will also lose the services of loan duo Dani Ceballos and Martin Odegaard this summer.

Arteta is not, at this stage, expected to push for an extended stay for Ceballos. It’s also understood that Real Madrid want to bring Odegaard back into their first-team for next season.

As for incomings, no names are mentioned. However, Arteta is known to want a midfielder and right-back to fill the void left by the potential exits.
