Scholes names likely Prem winners and sets timeline for Man Utd title glory

Former Manchester United star Paul Scholes does not rate his old side’s chances of winning the Premier League title and feels there are only two teams capable of lifting the trophy.

This season has been billed as possibly one of the closest races for years and that is the way things have begun. Chelsea sit at the top of the standings and are the only club to win five of their first seven top-flight games. Liverpool are just a solitary point behind ahead of four clubs on 14 points.

Manchester City and Manchester United are among them, with Everton and Brighton completing the quartet. The arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo prompted a few pundits to suggest the Red Devils might challenge for honours.

They have not won the title since the 2012-2013 campaign as Sir Alex Ferguson rounded off his tenure in style. City are favourites to defend their title while Liverpool have been tipped to push them all the way.

And Scholes believes the sides who played out a 2-2 draw before the international break are the ones to catch.

“I think it’s between Liverpool and Manchester City, I do think there is three great teams [including Chelsea],” he said on Sky Sports’ Overlap forum. “United have not fallen away, but it’s very early.

“I just think City and Liverpool, watching that game the quality was just so high. I just can’t see any other team getting close to them.”

Scholes eyes United momentum

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side enjoyed a superb opening to the season, with four wins and a draw in the first five matches. But they have stumbled in their last two outings, losing at home to Aston Villa before drawing 1-1 with Everton.

The Norwegian tactician was criticised for not starting Ronaldo against the Toffees. And it seems likely the Portugal skipper will get the nod against Leicester City on Saturday.

United could well still have a say in proceedings this term. But Scholes believes it is far more likely they will challenge in the near future.

“For Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] this season you have to feel them coming, with City when they won the league going back 10 years, they were putting pressure on teams, you felt them coming,” he added.

“With Liverpool you also felt them coming, I think they lost out by a point to City or something.

“I think this season, what would be acceptable [for United] is just feeling that team coming just like Liverpool and City did.”
