Solskjaer to deal with key spanner in Man Utd works as blossoming star rejects deal

Manchester United midfielder James Garner has thrown his future into doubt by turning down a new contract, according to a report.

The 20-year-old has risen through the youth ranks at Old Trafford and gained subsequent transfer attention. Following a loan move at Watford in the first half of last season, he moved to Nottingham Forest. Despite frustration at the Hornets, both stints served him well, the Englishman taking in 40 Championship outings.

However, the question surrounding his future has now come to the forefront of his and the club’s thinking.

Garner has only one year left on his current deal. Previous reports have claimed that United want to hand him a new contract before sending him back out on loan.

Indeed, Sheffield United, Forest and Stoke have registered interest in such an arrangement.

According to Football Insider, though, neither of those situations could arise. Instead, Garner could leave after rejecting United’s proposal.

His exit would come as a blow to the Red Devils, who believe he is capable of stepping up to the first team.

United do reportedly have the option to extend his deal by a further year until 2023. However, they would rather resolve his long-term future by tying him down to a new contract.

Still, the door has potentially opened for Forest, the Blades or Stoke to look at a permanent deal.

It remains unclear whether United are willing to sell at this stage, with negotiations still ongoing.

Garner made eight 90-minute outings at Watford, but United saw him getting more game time at Forest.

That move proved the correct one, the midfielder playing 90 minutes in 18 Championship games for the Midlands club.

Since returning to United, Garner has also played a key role in pre-season. He has featured in four matches – including the defeat to Queens Park Rangers – tallying 141 minutes.

Man Utd given Varane warning

As for United’s other summer transfer business, the Red Devils have spent to bolster their defence.

Raphael Varane has arrived from Real Madrid for a reported £41million. Arsenal, meanwhile, have paid £50million to add ex-Brighton man Ben White to their back line.

According to Shaun Wright-Phillips, though, White looks the better signing right now.

Indeed, the pundit voiced concerns for Varane’s adaptation to English football.
