Solskjaer told he is missing obvious solution to biggest Man Utd title threat

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to use his “excellent” squad in the right way to bring a fear factor back for the opposition, one pundit has claimed.

The Red Devils came into the new season following a successful transfer window. What’s more, their opening 5-1 win over Leeds looked a sign of their recruitment decisions paying off.

After that, Cristiano Ronaldo built the excitement further with two goals on his second United debut.

However, Solskjaer has since gone through a rocky patch of form with his side. They have lost three of their last five fixtures, exiting the Carabao Cup in the process.

United also made the worst possible start to their Champions League campaign, but Ronaldo’s last-minute winner over Villarreal on Wednesday helped.

The League Cup exit and the last-gasp Champions League victory over Villarreal both came at Old Trafford. Martin Keown has subsequently noticed a lack of a “fear factor” at the stadium.

The pundit told the Daily Mail: “The fear factor for the opposition must return.

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has got a vast array of attacking talent at his disposal as he showed the other night against Villarreal in the Champions League when he brought on Edinson Cavani and Jesse Lingard.

“United are brimming with excellent, experienced players. Solskjaer has to make the superiority of his squad count.

“If United are to win the Premier League, they need to make Old Trafford a fortress once more.”

Meanwhile, in his pre-match reading, Paul Merson asked: “How lucky do Manchester United want to get?”

Solskjaer, Man Utd fortunes must change

He added that Villarreal gave Solskjaer’s side a “proper footballing lesson”.  They took the lead at Old Trafford and could have done so earlier.

“Sooner or later, the way they play has to change and I believe this could be the game where they finally click. It can’t be so bad all the time, so I expect Manchester United to win this Premier League encounter 2-1,” Merson said.

“They were unfortunate not to score the penalty against Aston Villa and were well beaten against Villarreal despite getting a result, so it’s kind of hard to predict their results. Everton have done a great job so far this season, but they have their fair share of injury concerns.

“With a full-strength starting XI, they could have caused Manchester United problems, but I don’t think that will be the case at Old Trafford this week.”

After United’s clash with Everton, the Red Devils return from the international break to face Leicester, Atalanta and Liverpool.
