Southgate has powerful Sancho verdict, but reveals England factor holding him back

England manager Gareth Southgate says that he is aware of Jadon Sancho’s “explosive” potential but named a reason why he is holding the winger back.

Calls are growing for Southgate go give the Borussia Dortmund winger his first taste of Euro 2020 action. While Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden and Harry Kane have played the opening two games, many have called for a refresh. Indeed, Tottenham striker Kane has looked off the pace and has faced further criticism.

But while Sancho would not directly replace Kane, he could play alongside Jack Grealish, replacing Sterling and Foden.

Rio Ferdinand has noted that Sancho finished the season with the second most goal involvements of any England attacker for his club, but has yet to take to the pitch.

As the pressure grows, Southgate has revealed why he has yet to give Sancho a taste of the action.

“We’ve got some explosive options and a lot of them are young players and experiencing a big tournament for the first time,” Southgate said (via Goal).

“So as a coaching staff we are realistic about our expectations of them as individuals.

“Jadon is in that mix. He’s trained well the last few days and of course we have got those options and those decisions to make.”

Despite a sluggish start to the season, Sancho finished the season with 16 goals and 20 assists in all competitions.

As well as his role for England role, his potential transfer to Manchester United is also gaining traction.

United had an opening bid knocked back, but have now reportedly returned with an improved offer.

In any case, Sancho’s transfer value has dipped from the £108million valuation set by Dortmund last summer.

Man Utd eye Varane transfer

Elsewhere, United will reportedly begin talks over a transfer for Raphael Varane next week.

The Real Madrid defender has hit a crossroads in his career as he approaches a decade in the Spanish capital.

However, he has rejected the offer of a new deal and the Red Devils have reportedly jumped on another fresh development.
